Biography
Laura Mulka was raised in South Windsor, CT and now resides in Ellington, CT. She received her Bachelor’s in Nursing at Central Connecticut State University and her Master’s in Nursing – Adult Primary Nurse Practitioner degree at UConn.
Laura has been an oncology nurse for 30 years and an oncology nurse practitioner for 15 years. She enjoys educating patients, families, and professionals and has presented at numerous local and national events. She had developed numerous programs including creating specialized oncology units, developing pain and palliative care programs, and genetic screening programs. She has experience in Quality Improvement and has lead CMG’s Hematology/Oncology Division to an elite level obtaining Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) Certification.
Laura has specialty certifications as Advanced Practice Primary Care, Advanced Practice Oncology Nursing, and Advanced Practice Palliative and Hospice Care. She also has additional training in cancer genetics. She is an active member in many advanced practice nursing societies including on the panel for education and mentorship for Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology.
Laura was employed at Manchester Memorial Hospital (ECHN) for 15 years in a variety of roles. She created a specialized oncology program, and functioned as an Oncology Nurse Manager, Oncology Educator, Quality Improvement Coordinator, and Nursing Supervisor. After graduation as an APRN, she worked as an APRN at SFH in Gynecology Oncology. She developed a support group for patients and participated in the pain management program. She worked at a private office in Enfield, CT which transitioned into working at Johnson Memorial Hospital. She created the oncology program and provided direct patient care. She also created and ran the Pain and Palliative care program. She started at the former CMG in June of 2011. She has initiated the infusion center in Enfield, started the Advanced Practice Hospital program, and has developed a genetic screening program. She also leads the group for QOPI certification
Laura lives in Ellington with her husband Greg. She has 2 daughters and one son who are the light of her life. She also has a dog. She enjoys baking, cooking and exercising. She is a licensed instructor in Zumba Fitness, Zumba Gold and Aqua Zumba and enjoys teaching in her spare time.
