Helping Politicians Understand the Challenges of Cancer Care
September 11, 2017On September 6th, Starling’s Department of Hematology/Oncology was thrilled to host Senator Richard Blumenthal’s team to “Sit in My Chair.” First introduced in 2009, this program was designed to provide members of Congress and/or their aides with a first hand opportunity to see what oncology patients experience.
Members of the Senator’s team were able to walk through the patient experience including simulating:
- The registration process
- Sitting in the waiting room
- Receiving a cancer diagnosis
- Walking through a procedure with a nurse
- Sitting in the chemotherapy chair to “receive” treatment
After the simulation, the congressional staff spent time with Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jarrod Post and members of the Starling Oncology team to discuss the challenges, opportunities, and threats that local medical practices face when it comes to delivering high quality, affordable, and accessible oncology care in a community setting. This helps our local policy makers understand the issues at stake so they can effectively advocate for us and we can remain at the forefront of cancer care.
Thank you to our Oncology team members who helped us orchestrate this day.
