Health Insurance Results for 2016

Starling closes the books on the first full year of combined health insurance with mixed results. Overall, the health insurance total expense was 4.1% under budget, which is about $300K on a $7 million expenditure.

• The CMG branch was 19.4% under budget or $774K, but the GH branch actual expense exceeded budget by $474K.
• The CMG branch has 279 enrollees and the total health insurance expense was $3.22 million or $11,551 per enrolled employee. The GH branch had 228 employees enrolled and $3.74 million in total expense which is $16,419 per employee.
• The budget overall was $14,345 per employee.

It is not entirely clear why there are differences in total costs given the same plan design for all Starling employees.  We will continue to focus efforts on our employee wellness programs as a means to benefit our staff and reduce overall health care costs for the organization.
